Kiwi Espresso Cup and Saucer

This design and glaze are inspired by the much-treasured national bird of New Zealand, the Kiwi.  This rare and loved local is a significant national icon, equally cherished by all cultures in New Zealand. 

The bird itself is a taonga (treasure) to Maori, which has strong cultural, spiritual and historic associations with kiwi. Its feathers are valued in weaving kahukiwi (kiwi feather cloak) for people of high rank. This mug is adorned by a solo Kiwi bir, and the glaze used reflects the Kiwi ‘s natural habitat - a lovely rich mossy green forest floorbed set against a lovey smooth black stoneware clay.  The glaze is durable and food safe. Instead of a handle, a saucer is provided to rest the warm mug on initially,  and to complete the ritual of a relaxed drinking experience.
